Three frat members at Virginia State University are charged with hazing following what police describe as a "tragic event" over the weekend. The Petersburg Bureau of Police has been tight-lipped on what allegedly occurred Sunday in a dead-end area of Pocahontas Island—a peninsula on the north side of the Appomattox River in which two VSU students drowned during an initiation rite almost exactly six years ago—other than to say there were no injuries, per the Richmond Times-Dispatch. However, officers have charged Kappa Alpha Psi members Deonte Barkley, 22; George Feggins, 23; and Michael Snipes, 22, each with 10 counts of hazing "so as to cause bodily harm."

Barkley was arraigned Monday, while Feggins and Snipes are to be arraigned Friday, per the Times-Dispatch. The three men have also been suspended from school pending the outcome of their cases. Another eight students have been referred to the VSU Office of Judicial Affairs for disciplinary action "as a result of student conduct violations." According to officials, the university's anti-hazing policy "clearly states 'every form of hazing to include conspiracy to haze is prohibited.'" The Alpha Phi chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi frat is therefore suspended also. "We would like to thank the officers that discovered this tragic event and [VSU] for their cooperation with this ongoing investigation," police say, per WAVY. (More hazing stories.)
