When the McDonald's in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood got rid of its Dollar Menu, the owner claimed it was a simple grab for more money. But the homeless who often congregate outside the restaurant say it's actually a backhanded attempt to get them to move elsewhere. Now that a McDouble is $1.49 instead of 99 cents, "I eat less," says one homeless man. "If I don't have a dollar and I want food, I just end up going to a trash can."
And when cops come through and tell everyone gathered on the McDonald's patio to either buy something or move on, many must now move on, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. As Mayor Gavin Newsom looks to pass a ballot measure banning sitting or lying on public sidewalks, many see the menu change as an unofficial means of doing just that.
