A Southwest Airlines flight attendant stepped in to remove a baby from her parents after her mother slapped the crying 1-year-old girl in the face, police say. Authorities met the plane when it landed in Albuquerque and returned the child to her parents after questioning them, ABC reports. The baby had a black eye which the parents said had been caused by the family dog.

Southwest says the attendant merely offered to hold the baby because the parents were arguing, but police disagree, saying the attendant rightly moved the child out of harm's way. "I think it was a solid move from the part of the flight attendant to take custody of the child," Albuquerque airport's police chief said. "It neutralized the situation, it calmed everybody down."
