A Republican running for governor of Colorado has discovered a dangerous new threat to the American way of life and the personal freedoms Americans enjoy: bicycles. Dan Maes, a Tea Party favorite, has charged the Denver mayor, who he's running against, of joining a "well-disguised" international plot to have the UN take over the country though a bicycle-sharing program. The 400 red bikes for rent looks harmless enough, Maes said last week at a campaign rally, but "That's exactly the attitude they want you to have."
"This is bigger than it looks and it could threaten our personal freedoms," he added. It seems that Denver is a member of something called the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives—has been for nearly two decades—that promotes sustainable development. "At first, I thought, 'Gosh, public transportation, what's wrong with that, and what's wrong with people parking their cars and riding their bikes?" he explains. "But if you do your homework and research, you realize ICLEI is part of a greater strategy to rein in American cities under a United Nations treaty." Maes is favored to win a GOP primary next week, reports the Denver Post.
