America's top commander in Afghanistan has apologized for a Rolling Stone profile that depicts him as a "lone wolf" at odds with the Obama administration and his own troops. In the profile—which hits newsstands Friday—Gen. Stanley McChrystal says he felt "betrayed" by US ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry and aides say he was "disappointed" in President Obama. Aides are also quoted as mocking Joe Biden and special envoy Richard Holbrooke, the AP reports.
"Are you asking about Vice President Biden? 'Who's that?'" a laughing McChrystal says in one interview. "Biden?" asks one of his top advisers. "Did you say: Bite Me?" McChrystal issued a statement today stressing that he has "enormous respect and admiration for President Obama and his national security team," the Washington Post reports. "Throughout my career, I have lived by the principles of personal honor and professional integrity," he said. "What is reflected in this article falls far short of that standard."
