A Tennessee police department didn't know that domain names expire—and now a guy who's angry about a speeding ticket is the proud owner of http://www.bluffcitypd.com/. It seems the cop in charge of the site was out on sick leave, and no other city employees saw the warning notices posted on the site by hosting company Go Daddy about the imminent expiration, reports the Bristol Herald Courier.
"It’s kind of surprising that they’d just let it lapse like that,” said Brian McCrary, who had gone to the site after getting a ticket from a speed camera. “I figured they would be aware and renew it on their own.” They weren't, and he took it over for $80. He's using it to post links to critics of speed cameras. “It just slipped my mind,” said the chief. "If you open up a website and let it go down, somebody can buy it—I did not know that.” (More domain names stories.)
