3rd-Party Candidate Wins UK Election Debate

The leaders of both Britain's main political parties may be wishing they'd never agreed to the country's first American-style televised election debate. Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg—who offered up his party as a fresh alternative to Gordon Brown's Labour and David Cameron's Conservatives—is widely seen to have won the debate by a hefty margin, the Guardian reports.

Brown and Cameron traded blows on the economy but neither failed to strike a chord with voters, according to multiple polls that put Clegg in first place. "The more they attack each other the more they sound like one another," said Clegg, whose party stands little chance of winning outright but may play kingmaker if the election results in a hung parliament. The trio will debate twice more before Britain goes to the polls on May 6.
