GOP Savages Pelosi Strategy for Passing Health Reform

The GOP ratcheted up the already intense campaign against the Democrats' push to pass health care reform yesterday, targeting an obscure legislative move Nancy Pelosi said she might use to get a version of the Senate bill through the House. Outraged Minority Leader John Boehner called the "deem and pass” tactic "the ultimate in power-grabs," though Pelosi countered that the Republicans have used "deem and pass" hundreds of times.

The move critics have dubbed the "Slaughter Solution," after Rep. Louise Slaughter, would get the bill to the president without a House vote on the Senate bill separate from the changes they would make to it. It would allow House Democrats to get reform through without having to vote in favor of Senate provisions like the "Cornhusker Kickback," but the constitutionality is so murky that the Supreme Court may take an interest, legal experts tell Politico.
