Thanks in part to the recession, denim is all the rage—but the growing tendency to layer denim on denim (on, sometimes, even more denim) might be too much. “It can look silly, too contrived,” a video producer tells the Wall Street Journal. Nonetheless, the look is everywhere, from Jessica Biel wearing a denim jacket over a denim vest on the cover of Vogue, to the denim trench coats and shirt dresses for sale at Banana Republic.
The denim-on-denim trend has been the object of mockery—for example, when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake showed up at the American Music Awards in a floor-length denim dress and a denim suit, respectively—and the look has been called “the Canadian tuxedo.” But some experts, like a Banana Republic exec, think the stigma is fading: “Maybe it's been a fashion no-no,” he says, “but it's a fashion OK at the moment.”
