A Colombian provincial governor snatched from his home Monday has been found dumped dead on a country road. Police believe leftist guerrillas cut Luis Francisco Cuellar's throat as they fled from security forces. Rebels dressed in military uniforms killed one policeman and wounded two others when they seized Cuellar from his home in Florencia, the BBC reports.

The rebels "killed him miserably," President Alvaro Uribe said in a nationally televised statement. He vowed that Colombia would not be "held captive by the whim of terrorists, terrorists who bathe the country in blood and who trick us every day." The left-wing rebel group FARC has not claimed responsibility for the killing, but it is widely believed to be behind it. (More Luis Francisco Cuellar stories.)
