Lifestyle / Golden Globe Notable Golden Globes Snubs Lee Daniels misses Best Director race, The Road shut out, and more By Evann Gastaldo, Newser Staff Posted Dec 16, 2009 11:44 AM CST Copied Gabourey Sidibe and director Lee Daniels participate in a news conference for the film 'Precious' during the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 in Toronto. (AP Photo/Evan Agostini) The Golden Globes are “as notable for the films and performances that members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association omit as for those that they celebrate,” writes Chris Lee in the Los Angeles Times, and yesterday’s nominations “had no shortage of surprising snubs.” Lee, and Gregg Kilday in the Hollywood Reporter, point out a few: Lee Daniels, Precious: The only director whose movie got a best dramatic picture nod without being nominated for best director. Clint Eastwood, Invictus: The only best director nominee whose movie was not nominated in the top drama category. The Lovely Bones: Shut out, with the exception of Stanley Tucci’s supporting actor nod. The Road: John Hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel received no nominations. Zooey Deschanel, (500) Days of Summer: Though costar Joseph Gordon-Levitt earned a best comedy actor nod, Deschanel’s spot in the corresponding best actress race might have been usurped by Meryl Streep—who was nominated twice in that category. Joel and Ethan Coen, A Serious Man: The Coen brothers were largely ignored, as only leading man Michael Stuhlbarg was nominated. Alec Baldwin: He scored yet another 30 Rock nomination, but failed to make it into the best supporting actor race for It’s Complicated. (More Golden Globe stories.) Report an error
