Glenn Greenwald finds the rationale for the Afghan troop surge President Obama will announce tonight to be "remarkably similar" to that used by George W. Bush when he argued for more troops in Iraq in 2007. The speech hasn’t been given yet, but the administration has been leaking enough to sink a ship, and “to anyone with a memory that extends back for more than a few weeks, all of this seems anything but new.”
Strict benchmarks. No blank check for the Afghan government. Moral responsibility. Al Qaeda threats. The training of national forces. “It's anything but surprising that it all sounds remarkably similar,” Greenwald writes on Salon. Sure, “it's possible that once we hear the actual speech, rather than the White House's coordinated depiction of it, that there will be new elements.” But really. “This pretense that Obama spent months carefully deliberating in order to devise some new and exotic thought pattern about the war seems absurd on its face.” (More President Obama speech stories.)
