Iraqi al-Qaeda Flaunts US Pilot's ID

An Iraqi group linked to al-Qaeda says it will release video about an Air Force pilot the US declared dead last year, Reuters reports. The group's statement termed the airman “missing,” and was accompanied by an image of Troy Gilbert’s military ID. The pilot was declared dead in a November 2006 crash after human remains were found on the scene.

The Islamic State in Iraq, which has claimed responsibility for several major kidnappings and attacks, released a similar statement in June about three US soldiers. The promised video claimed the group had captured and killed the Americans, but its only evidence was the soldier’s ID cards. (More Air Force stories.)
