Embattled Sen. Larry Craig, arrested for disorderly conduct after allegedly soliciting sex in an airport men's room, is now flip-flopping on his decision to resign from the Senate Sept. 30. Craig is fighting the charges to which he pleaded guilty three months ago and will consider staying in the Senate if he clears his name by that date, the Idaho Statesman reports.
In a phone message from last Saturday obtained by Roll Call, Craig indicated that he was leaving an "out" for himself in his resignation speech: "We have reshaped my statement a little bit to say it is my intent to resign," he said in the message, just before the speech. "I’m willing to fight," Craig is quoted as saying by Roll Call. "This thing could take a new turn or a new shape." Craig hired two top Washington criminal defense lawyers, including the attorney who handled Michael Vick's dog-fighting case. (More Larry Craig stories.)
