Scientists probing the mind-body connection are finding ever more evidence of the ways temperament affects a person's health. Some personality traits can boost your health; others can weaken your immune system, give you job burnout or even send you to an early grave, Live Science reports. These include:
- Cynicism: Suspicious of others' motives? Seeing hostility in those around you could raise your chances of heart disease.
- Lack of meaning: Elderly people without a sense of purpose are twice as likely to die in the next five years.
- Fretting: Here's something else for the anxious to worry about: they die younger, perhaps because many neurotics ease their jitters with cigarettes.
- Poor self-control: The well-organized and self-disciplined have healthier lifestyles and—you guessed it—live longer.
