Iran Nuclear Talks Stall; Sanctions Loom

Iran looks set to face another round of international sanctions as nuclear talks have reached an impasse and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad refuses to discuss a compromise, reports the Guardian. Mohamed ElBaradei, who heads the UN nuclear watchdog, said today Iran has not suspended enrichment activities and continues to be uncooperative with the agency. "There is stalemate," the Nobel Prize winner said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has given Iran until the end of this month to respond to a compromise offer concerning uranium enrichment. But Ahmadinejad told journalists in Tehran, "From our point of view, Iran's nuclear issue is over." President Obama and other world leaders have signaled that they will bring forward severe new sanctions targeting the country's oil industry unless it returns to talks.
