South Carolina Republicans voted to censure Gov. Mark Sanford last night, but since they didn’t call for his head, he’s likely to keep it, Politico reports. They chided Sanford for failing to adhere to the “core principles and beliefs” of the party, but said that “barring further revelation” that scolding would be “the party’s last word on the matter.”
Twenty-two committee members voted for the reprimand; 10 voted to call for Sanford’s resignation, while nine voted to support him. “The events of the past two weeks have been as divisive as they have been disappointing,” said the party chairman. “Now is the time for healing.” A Sanford spokesman told the State he “fully appreciates the party’s position and intends to work diligently to earn back its trust.” (More Mark Sanford stories.)
