South Carolina's AWOL governor is expected to be back at work tomorrow, the State reports. Mark Sanford has been incommunicado for several days, save for a fleeting cell phone signal picked up near Atlanta. Aides say he's been hiking on the Appalachian Trail, though his political opponents are skeptical. "I don't believe it, but he said it and that's what I have to accept," a miffed state senator told the Hill. "He owes an explanation as to why he would do this."
Next time, Sanford should keep his cell phone on and let his security detail tag along, said Sen. Jake Knotts. “If he is not willing to do so, he should turn his gubernatorial authority over to the lieutenant governor." Sanford’s wife said her husband took the Father’s Day weekend to get some work done. She didn't know his exact location, either, but said she wasn't concerned. “He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids.” (More Mark Sanford stories.)
