A senior Spanish police inspector was killed in the Basque region's city of Bilbao this morning in a car bombing, the BBC reports. The regional government blamed the attack on the Eta Basque separatist group. If that’s confirmed, it will mark the group’s first fatal attack since the Spanish Socialist Party took over the region in March elections.
Eduardo Puelles Garcia, 49, was in a parking lot when the bomb exploded. “There was an attack, a big explosion, that burnt up the individual inside the car and damaged other vehicles nearby,” said one regional official. Prime Minister Jose Luiz Zapatero condemned the Eta, saying, “We knew it could happen again, but we will never resign ourselves to accept that.” (More Spain stories.)
