Clerics Invite Opposition to Talk

Iran’s Guardian Council has invited all three opposition candidates to a meeting to air their grievances Saturday, the New York Times reports. But the opposition is likely to view that olive branch warily; it has already turned down the council’s offer for a partial recount. Protesters say they intend to continue their mass street campaign demanding the vote be annulled entirely.

Ayatollah Khamenei asked the Guardian Council, a powerful 12-cleric watchdog group with the power to unseat Khamenei himself, to look into the election results. Iran’s state radio has reported that the council has begun a “careful examination” of 646 complaints about the vote.
