The FBI believes that hundreds of hitchhikers, prostitutes, and stranded motorists have been murdered by serial killers working as long-haul truckers, reports the Los Angeles Times. Some 500 women have been murdered over the last 3 decades and their bodies discarded along highways, and at rest stops and motels frequented by truckers who criss-cross the nation. Agents first began to make the connection 5 years ago when they built a case against a trucker for a string of murders along Oklahoma highways.
After agents launched a "Highway Serial Killings" database, they uncovered information on scores of truckers with rape and murder arrests. Serial killer truckers have "a mobile crime scene," said one investigator. "You can pick a girl up on the East Coast, kill her two states away and dump her three states after that."
