Mexico’s disastrous drug war, which threatens to send millions of refugees into the southern US, is a problem of our own making, Mark Krikorian writes in the National Review. But while America’s drug lust—and its burgeoning counterpart in Mexico itself—can’t be fixed, tighter border regulations could blunt the pain of a state that isn’t failed—“yet.”

“Even if marijuana is decriminalized or even legalized,” Krikorian writes, “that’s just not going to happen with heroin or meth.” His advice: Firm up the borders, ditch amnesty, and encourage cooperation between local and federal authorities to catch Mexican drug gangs. Mexico is not a failed state, but its public is disenchanted and “there’s not much we can do to ‘fix’’’ it, “as our unsuccessful attempts at nation-building elsewhere should have taught us by now.” (More Mexico stories.)
