Gates Apologizes to Hillary

Hillary shouldn't have been called a traitor, Robert Gates wrote yesterday in a letter apologizing for a deputy's refusal to share Iraq withdrawal plans with members of the Senate Armed Services Committee. The deputy had charged that the divulging the information could “reinforce enemy propaganda.”

In the letter, Gates confirmed his belief in the “essential” nature of congressional oversight. In an effort to end the highly publicized feud, Gates offered what the AP calls the “most explicit admission to date” that withdrawal plans were being drafted. But he defended the writer of the original letter, calling him a “valued member” of the department. (More Hillary Clinton stories.)
