Just who are all these men getting Botox, and why do they do it—especially during a recession? The number of male Botox users has soared to 300,000—or about 7% of total face-freezers—since 2001, and that percentage hasn't dipped in today's economy. Wondering what men lie behind these stats, Robyn Twomey, writing for Time, calls up his buddies to see who is using.
He finds one friend—Bill, in his 40s—and visits him in Los Angeles as he gets a "lunchtime lift." Bill's doctor tells Twomey that men fear the pain far more than women, and yes, most male users are either gay or in show biz. Still, Twomey wonders, why is Bill so determined to remove his "furrowed brow lines"? Then Bill's wife pipes in: "Thank God!" she yells. "They drive me insane. It's like when somebody has a big zit on the side of their face and they don't pop it. Just pop it!" (More Botox stories.)
