Opposition Leader Claims Victory in Ghana Runoff

John Atta Mills has proclaimed himself the winner of Ghana’s presidential runoff election, the BBC reports, but the ruling NPP party says the results are still too close to call. Tensions are running high over the poll—earlier today police were forced to fire warning shots at a huge crowd of Mills supporters descending on election headquarters demanding results.

Election observers detect no foul play in the polling, and are urging both candidates to accept the results. But the NPP intends to challenge results from the Volta region, where it says its agents have been the victims of intimidation.
