There’s just one Bush out on the campaign in this final weekend before the election, and her name ain’t George: First lady Laura Bush, still popular among Republicans, is stumping around the country for GOP candidates, who want big-name help but not attachment to the president’s unpopularity, the Hill reports. But the president hasn’t just been watching from the sidelines.

Earlier this month, he urged staffers to hit the trail for John McCain because “he expects our organized efforts to push him over the edge.” But McCain himself has only appeared recently with Bush in DNC-sponsored ads. The White House insists the economy is monopolizing the president’s attention, but even Bush joked about keeping his distance from his would-be successor. (More George W. Bush stories.)
