Brit Marathoners Stranded in Mountain Storm

Dozens of British marathoners remained unaccounted for after they were hit by torrential rains and raging winds during a race in the rugged terrain of the Lake District yesterday, reports the Telegraph. Pockets of athletes sought shelter in a barn, community center and a school, while mountain rescue workers searched for others.

The race was canceled for the first time in its 41-year history after the storm broke out early yesterday, triggering several flash flood warnings. Many of the 2,700 runners were experienced mountaineers who were carrying emergency equipment and tents in the two-day race, considered the toughest endurance event in Britain.
