Another key Republican has broken with President Bush over the war in Iraq, Politico reports. The war is a "failed strategy" and it's time to "move our troops out of combat operations," New Mexico Senator Pete Domenici said yesterday. Domenici, who serves on the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, faces re-election next year.
The senator is endorsing a bill that would adopt recommendations of the Iraq Study Group, which calls for a draw-down of most troops. Last week, GOP senators from Ohio and Indiana also called for the White House to begin withdrawing troops. The Senate revisits the issue next week when it will consider the next round of Defense Department funding. (More Iraq stories.)
