An Air India flight out of Canada got delayed last month for the scariest of reasons: Police say a pilot was too drunk to fly, reports Reuters. Officers at Vancouver International Airport deemed the unidentified pilot unfit for duty after administering two breathalyzer tests before the Boeing 777 flight to Delhi on Dec. 23, according to the report. No details were provided on the test results, but Air India had to bring in an alternate pilot to replace him. Canadian regulations bar pilots from drinking within 12 hours of a flight.
"The pilot has been taken off flying duties during the process of enquiry," the airline said in a statement, per the Hindustan Times. "Air India maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any violation of applicable rules and regulations." The case lands at a sensitive time for the carrier, which had a June crash of a Boeing Dreamliner that killed 260 people. Separately, Indian authorities have moved to tighten alcohol-testing rules for flight crews, including a proposed lifetime license revocation after three positive tests.
