When Liz Cheney crossed parties and campaigned against Republican Kari Lake in the Arizona governor's race, Lake reveled in it. At the time, the Trump-backed candidate issued a public letter thanking Cheney for coming out against her. “In fact, my team telIs me your commercial should add another 10 points to our lead!" she wrote. "I guess that’s why they call the Cheney anti-endorsement the gift that keeps on giving." Now that the race has been called for Democrat Katie Hobbs, Cheney is responding in succinct fashion. "You're welcome," the outgoing congresswoman tweeted, above Lake's sarcastic thank-you.
Cheney, who lost her own GOP primary, campaigned for Hobbs because Lake supports former President Trump's claims of a stolen 2020 election. On Monday night, after outlets including the AP called the race for Hobbs, Lake suggested she would be pushing a fraud narrative in her own race as well, per the National Review. "Arizonans know BS when they see it," she tweeted.
The stance isn't a big surprise, given that during the campaign, Lake would not commit to accepting a losing result. On Monday, Trump himself wrote on Truth Social that "they just took the election away from Kari Lake," per the New York Times. With 95% of votes counted, Hobbs led by 20,000 votes, less than 1% of the 2.5 million votes cast, and the AP and others determined Lake would not be able to close the gap. (More Kari Lake stories.)
