A New York Times sitdown planned at the beginning of the month went a bit off the rails after the recent social media drama involving the subject of the interview, James Corden. Corden was supposed to be talking to the Times about his upcoming exit after more than eight years hosting The Late Late Show, and his new miniseries on Amazon Prime Video, Mammals. Instead, the sitdown involved quite a bit of time circling around Corden's reaction to restaurateur Keith McNally's Instagram announcement that he'd banned Corden from one of his restaurants due to multiple incidents in which the late night host treated staff rudely. McNally later claimed Corden had apologized, resulting in him being un-banned.
Corden repeatedly insisted it was "silly" to even discuss the incident, saying at one point, "I feel so Zen about the whole thing. Because I think it’s so silly. I just think it’s beneath all of us. It’s beneath you. It’s certainly beneath your publication." But he also pointed out when a guest at the Manhattan restaurant where he was being interviewed got upset about the eggs she ordered, saying, "Can you imagine now, if we just blasted her on Twitter? Would that be fair? This is my point. It’s insane."
Dave Itzkoff writes in the Times that the interview was often "awkward."
