Sheryl Sandberg's last day as a Meta employee was Friday, though she remains on the board of Facebook's parent company. However, due to what the Meta board terms "continuing threats to her safety," the board announced Friday it had approved the continued provision of personal security to Meta's former chief operating officer. The board said it expects to continue paying for such services from Oct. 1 through June 30, 2023, Reuters reports. Security will be provided at Sandberg's residences as well as while she travels. Sandberg is also still receiving compensation as a non-employee director due to her role on the board, Engadget reports.
Writes D. Wollman at Engadget, "The board's announcement on Friday comes days after Meta was reported to have suspended all hiring, with a warning of possible layoffs on the way, making for some potentially awkward optics." The piece also looks at the controversy-plagued final days of Sandberg's 14-year tenure at Facebook/Meta, including allegations she used company resources to block an unflattering article on her boyfriend; allegations she used company resources to pay for her wedding and possibly promote her book; and the series of scandals that hit Facebook during her last years there, from Cambridge Analytica to allegations that the social media company enabled genocide in Myanmar.
