Police have released videos from the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old girl inside a North Hollywood department store last week. The edited video package posted online by the Los Angeles Police Department includes 911 calls, bodycam video, surveillance footage, and more. Valentina Orellana-Peralta was hiding in a dressing room with her mother when a bullet believed to have been fired by a police officer came through the wall, hitting and killing her. The footage posted by the LAPD shows the suspect attacking multiple women inside the Burlington store before at least one officer opened fire on him, shooting at least three times, CNN reports. One of the women is seen covered in blood on the floor. The suspect was shot and also died at the scene.
Multiple 911 calls were made about the incident as the man wandered around the store and then started attacking people, and at least one caller reported that he had a gun, the AP reports. But no firearm was found, and the man can be seen beating people with a cable-style bike lock, which was the only weapon recovered. Police say they believe a bullet skipped off the floor and went through the wall and into the dressing room, but the full investigation could take a year to complete. "We at the LAPD would like to express our most heartfelt condolences and profound regret for the loss of this innocent victim, Valentina Orellana-Peralta. There are no words that can describe the depth of the sorrow we feel at this tragic outcome," says a police captain. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is representing the girl's family.
