A Texas man is charged with killing his girlfriend one day after an ultrasound confirmed she was pregnant. Cavanna Smith, a 25-year-old teacher, was found to be about four and a half weeks pregnant at an Oct. 5 ultrasound appointment, which her sister, Brittany Wilson, attended. Smith was nervous and excited, but her boyfriend, Kwanmaine Boyd, "was not happy and said he did not want any more children," Wilson tells KTRK. Early the next morning, Smith went to see Boyd near his northeast Houston home to pick up some money that he owed her, and she shared her location with her sister, fearing something might happen, Wilson adds.
Within minutes, Smith texted a friend, saying she'd "been kidnapped" and was "in the back of Kwan's truck," per KTRK. "He got my money and don't wanna give it to me," read a final text sent at 6:44am, per KPRC. Police say 10 minutes later, a driver traveling along a Houston street not far from Boyd's home spotted a man with a long gun arguing with a woman, who asked that the driver call 911, per KHOU. Another witness told police she was calling 911 when "she saw the male shoot the female," according to court documents seen by the Washington Post. Witnesses reported that the man stood over the woman before fleeing in a white truck.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. In her apartment, police say they found positive pregnancy tests, an ultrasound image, and a note to Boyd dated Oct. 3. "I know this isn't what we expected but WE ARE expecting!!!" it read, per the Post. Police also say they found a receipt and surveillance footage showing a man who looked like Boyd purchasing a firearm and ammunition weeks earlier. The suspect was on the run for a month before he was arrested Friday without incident. Facing a felony charge of capital murder, which could bring the death penalty, Boyd was denied bond on Saturday, per the Houston Chronicle. (More capital murder stories.)
