Brawl Breaks Out Between NCAA Rivals: 'This Is Terrible'

"Just no point to it." That was one ESPN announcer's reaction to the end of the NCAA basketball game Tuesday between the University of Kansas' Jayhawks and Kansas State's Wildcats. NBC News reports that, with just seconds left, the Jayhawks' Silvio De Sousa was dribbling out the clock when Kansas State's DaJuan Gordon stole the ball and started dashing down the court to the basket. As Gordon went up for the shot, De Sousa blocked it, knocking Gordon to the ground in the process—and jump-starting a bench-clearing brawl between the two teams. Per NBC Sports, staff from the teams, security, and police tried to pull players apart as punches were hurled. De Sousa himself was spotted throwing a punch, as well as picking up a stool, which a Kansas staffer pulled back from behind, per the AP.

"Oh, this is terrible," an ESPN announcer says during a video clip of the fight. "There are going to be ramifications for this," another adds. "Obviously, there was a role that was played by our players," Kansas coach Bill Self said at a post-game presser. "I'm not saying that both parties weren't in the wrong, but I know that we were in the wrong." A longer apology was posted by Jeff Long, the Jayhawks' director of athletics, who called what happened "simply unacceptable and not reflective of who we are." Long said he and Self would review the incident and determine what consequences are needed. For anyone still interested in the results of the game, the Jayhawks won, 81-60.
