Train Plunges Into the Potomac

A freight train went off the rails near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, on Saturday and sent two cars plunging into the Potomac, CNN reports. Luckily the CSX locomotive was just pulling empty grain cars over the Winchester and Potomac Railroad Bridge when the 2:30am EST derailment occurred. But the Civil War-era bridge has been shut down and access to a few state parks—the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, and Harpers Ferry—has been cut back, per the Washington Post. No one was hurt, but the bridge was damaged. CSX says an investigation is underway. (More train crash stories.)
