A suspect found holding two bound and gagged hostages has been arrested for alleged links to the massacre of nine women and children in northern Mexico. The suspect was found in the hills of Agua Prieta, the Mexican town across the border from Douglas, Ariz., with four assault rifles and ammo, as well as several vehicles, including a bulletproof SUV and another vehicle connected to a robbery in Phoenix, the Ministerial Agency for Criminal Investigations announced Tuesday, per USA Today. It wasn't immediately clear how the suspect came into contact with the hostages, said to have been held in a white pickup truck, or what role he or she may have played in Monday's massacre of the Mormon family with dual US-Mexico citizenship.
The arrest came as former Mexican Foreign Minister Jorge Castaneda suggested the family had been targeted. "They had stood up to the drug cartels, and they did have certain frictions either with the cartels or with neighboring communities over water rights," he told CNN, which reports another family member was murdered in 2009 after establishing patrols against cartels. Castaneda added 90 police officers had monitored the community since 2011 before some or all were withdrawn earlier this year. Relative Taylor Langford sides with Castaneda. "There was no mistaken identity," he tells CBS News, noting women and children were attacked "in broad daylight." Per USA Today, Christina Langford Johnson was killed after getting out of her vehicle to show the attackers that she wasn't a threat. (More Mexico stories.)
