Every night, 21-year-old Cayla Campos and her boyfriend would head to a park in Albuquerque, NM, to play Pokemon Go. It was their routine. After all, Bianchetti Park was close to the couple's apartment in what a resident describes as "a nice, quiet family neighborhood," per KRQE. Just before midnight on Friday, however, it was the wrong place to be. Police say Campos was driving with her boyfriend when she witnessed an armed robbery and was fatally shot. Campos had tried to drive away from the scene after seeing two people robbing a person in a car, according to police. Instead, she was struck in the back of the neck by one of several bullets fired in her direction before crashing into an unoccupied home, per BuzzFeed.
"I don't know how to live without you," Campos' father writes in a Facebook post, noting his daughter was "murdered in cold blood," per BuzzFeed. At least two others have been killed elsewhere in the country while playing Pokemon Go. The game notes players should "use their own judgment about which parts of the city or countryside they feel safe going to at various times of day or night." Police haven't named any suspects in the shooting but say the robbery involved a red car, possibly a Ford Mustang, and a silver, four-door sedan. (More shooting stories.)
