A male elk in mating season is nothing to mess with—as two people learned after getting too close to one Thursday in Colorado, NBC News reports. Bystander video shows an elk throwing a woman down and attacking her in Estes Park as people nearby scramble to safety, including a man who fell and hit his head. Brian Berg, the town's park supervisor, saw the goring in progress and drove his pickup truck down a sidewalk to the scene. "When she got up, he went back at her," he tells CBS Denver. "[The elk] flipped her several times."
Berg was able to pull up between the elk and the woman. "And he just hit [my truck] as soon as I parked," says Berg. "He shook that truck like it was nothing. He put a pretty good hole through it." The woman was able to run to safety and received medical treatment, but KDVR reports that her condition is unknown, while the man who fell was given hospital treatment for a cut. Berg warns that it's best to stay "at least a football length away" from elk, especially during mating season, but people "get too close ... all the time." He calls it "a very dangerous situation."
