Dowd: AOC Risks Blowing It With Pelosi Fight

Maureen Dowd helped spark this battle, and now she's taking sides. The New York Times columnist—whose Nancy Pelosi interview frayed tempers within the Democratic Party—reviews recent events and finds one side too extreme. "In the age of Trump, there is no more stupid proposition than that Nancy Pelosi is the problem," Dowd writes. She targets Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by adding, "If AOC and her Pygmalions and acolytes decide that burning down the House is more important than deposing Trump, they will be left with a racist backward president and the emotional satisfaction of their own purity." This after Pelosi shrugged off AOC and her allies as unimportant in a $4.6 billion border-bill battle, and AOC accused Pelosi of deriding "newly elected women of color."

"She slimed the speaker, who has spent her life fighting for the downtrodden and who was instrumental in getting the first African-American president elected and passing his agenda against all odds, as a sexist and a racist," writes Dowd. "AOC should consider the possibility that people who disagree with her do not disagree with her color." Dowd goes on to call AOC's chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, "the real instigator," and quotes former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel as saying Chakrabarti is "a snot-nosed punk" who doesn't appreciate Pelosi's history of fighting for the left. Dowd admits to loving AOC at first, imagining her as "the Karate Kid" to Pelosi's political "sensei," but it looks like the love is gone.
