With police fearing the city is dealing with a serial killer, Detroit officials have announced a door-to-door search for victims and information. "We are not going to let up," Police Chief James Craig said Friday, per the Detroit Free Press. "We are going to find this violent, predatory criminal." The bodies of three women have been found; one of them has not been identified. Craig said the killer seems to be luring women to vacant buildings, raping them, and then killing them. Police suspect that the killer is seeking out sex workers in their early 50s, per CNN, and that the three slayings were committed by one person. The killings began in March.
The city's mayor promised to board up or tear down thousands of vacant houses. After the news conference with police Friday, Mayor Mike Duggan said 40 police officers would begin to search every abandoned house. Eight teams working six days a week will board up housing, he said. A representative of a community action group also spoke at the news conference, saying volunteer groups are helping, as well, because Detroit residents "should not have to live in fear."
