Vernon Messier and his wife, Lillian, were checking out at a Publix supermarket in Land O' Lakes, Florida, when Lillian's purse fell from the cash register counter to the floor. The purse had a Derringer inside, and the two-shot pistol went off when it hit the floor, shooting Vernon in the shin, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Publix provided video of the incident, which happened around 2pm Sunday, to police; the video shows Vernon "flinch and drop to the ground," per the Times. Police also found a hole in the side of the purse. The 69-year-old did not suffer life-threatening injuries, WFLA reports; he was transported to the hospital in stable condition. His 67-year-old wife possesses a concealed carry permit. Police do not expect charges to be filed. (A very similar story out of Mississippi.)
