A Michigan reporter might want to consider a second career in law enforcement after aiding police in two cases in less than a week. WWJ's Mike Campbell was reporting at a burned-out shopping center in Warren last Thursday when he called police about a potential looter spotted breaking the window of a nail salon before rummaging within. Campbell then followed the man until officers arrived and took him into custody, ultimately laying charges. Less than a week later on Wednesday morning, the reporter was following a helicopter searching for a missing woman with dementia when he suddenly spotted 89-year-old Barbara Kasler in her pajamas and slippers at an intersection in Shelby Township, reports the AP.
As Campbell finished a U-turn, "she just appeared at the back of this car that I had seen before," he tells WWJ, which notes Kasler had been missing in the cold for at least five hours. After Campbell warmed her up in his car, she was taken to a hospital but seemed in good health. "I just wanted to do something different," she reportedly said. "We owe you lunch!" police said of Campbell, per the AP, though he says he was just "in the right place at the right time." That was not the case during another odd encounter in August: "You always prepare yourself or leave yourself an out when you're covering these stories," Campbell told WWJ after a suspect used a metal baton to smash the windshield of his news vehicle as he reported live on a fatal crash.
