Roommate getting on your nerves? Bustle reports more Americans than ever are living alone, and 24/7 Wall St. has ranked the US metro areas where it's most common. Leading the way is Gainesville, Florida, where four in 10 households have but a single resident. Most of the cities atop the list have a lower-than-average cost of living, making it easier for a single person to pay the bills. The top 10, based on 2017 data from the US Census Bureau:

  1. Gainesville, Fla.: 40.4%
  2. Grand Forks, ND-Minn.: 39.1%
  3. Santa Fe, NM: 36.5%
  4. Decatur, Ill.: 36.1%
  5. Pittsfield, Mass.: 35.9%
  6. Wilmington, NC: 35.3%
  7. Gadsden, Ala.: 35.2%
  8. Cumberland, Md.-W.Va.: 35.2%
  9. Brunswick, Ga.: 35.2%
  10. Champaign-Urbana, Ill.: 34.8%
