Ironically, the frosty relationship between the US and Russia doesn't extend to the frozen curves of Olympic luge. “This goes against every Russian-USA stereotype ever but one of the Russian athletes actually wanted me to use his sled,” Reuters quotes Chris Mazdzer as saying. Mazdzer made US Olympic history when he won silver in the luge last Sunday in Pyeongchang. But before that he had been in a years-long slump and couldn't figure out why, USA Today reports. Other athletes wanted to help him figure it out, leading to the unnamed Russian athlete offering a top-of-the-line sled to Mazdzer. “If you have the fastest equipment, why would you give it to anyone else?" Mazdzer says. “It shows we care about each other and there is this human connection which crosses countries and cultures." In the end, Mazdzer didn't end up using the sled because he was too big for it. (Norwegian skier breaks age record with Olympic alpine win.)
