A grisly mystery is unfolding at the country's largest wastewater treatment facility. MLive reports three objects believed to be human organs have been found at the Great Lakes Water Authority Water Recovery Facility in the span of a week. The most recent object was found Wednesday, according to the Detroit News. Fox 2 reports the first two objects—found on Dec. 15 and Dec. 16—are believed to be human kidneys.
The objects have been sent to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office, but a spokesperson says the office has yet to confirm they're human organs. Police say there's an ongoing investigation into the objects. It's possible human organs are getting into the sewage system from medical waste facilities. The objects were found in an area of the facility that removes debris from wastewater, and officials say the discovery of the objects hasn't affected activity at the facility.
