Prosecutors: Husband Bought Cocaine After Killing Teacher

Andrew MacCormack had an expensive cocaine habit that was ruining his marriage, prosecutors said as the alleged murderer appeared in court Wednesday. Prosecutors said Vanessa MacCormack, a second-grade teacher in Revere, Mass., had recently threatened to divorce MacCormack and sell their house, the Boston Globe reports. They said MacCormack had a $500-a-week habit and his wife became suspicious after thousands of dollars disappeared from their account and he blamed it on hackers. Her $13,000 engagement ring also went missing, as did a replacement ring. MacCormack, 29, is accused of beating and suffocating Vanessa to death at their home on Saturday.

Prosecutors said that after MacCormack killed Vanessa, he took their 1-year-old daughter with him to a carpentry job. They said he left when she needed a fresh diaper, but instead of picking up a new one, he withdrew cash from an ATM and bought cocaine before returning home to clean up the crime scene before calling 911, CBS News reports. Police said they found him "hyperventilating" outside the home. MacCormack's attorney argued that an intruder must have committed the crime because bleach was used to clean the crime scene, something he said MacCormack would not have done because his DNA was already in the home.
