A Yale art student repeatedly impregnated herself and then induced miscarriages with drugs; her undergraduate thesis documenting the process goes on display next week. The exhibition will include video of the miscarriages, the Yale Daily News reports, and also the student’s own preserved blood. Aliza Shvarts insists “it’s not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone”—but classmates aren’t so sure.
Fellow seniors expressed anger at a meeting last week; a member of a campus anti-abortion group said, “I think it’s morally wrong.” Shvarts says she was not concerned about medical side effects, and notes she never consulted a doctor. Shvarts hopes the project “provokes inquiry;" the scale of that inquiry is likely to be much broader than she might've expected. (More Yale stories.)
