The FBI had some long chats with one of President Trump's former campaign advisers about his Russian contacts weeks before Special Counsel Robert Mueller took charge of the investigation. Insiders tell the Washington Post that Carter Page, whose name has repeatedly surfaced in connection with the investigation, was questioned for a total of around 10 hours during five meetings with FBI agents in March about his contacts with the Trump campaign and with Russia, where he used to work as an investment banker. The Post describes the meetings as the "most extensive known questioning of a potential suspect" in the Russia investigation.
Page confirmed that what he called "extensive discussions" happened in March. He said the agents he spoke to acknowledged that he is "a loyal American veteran." The conversations "gave me confidence that there are still logical, honest individuals at the Bureau who respect civil rights and the constitution, despite the recent devastating impact on our democracy by self-centered politicians at the top of the Clinton-Obama-Comey regime," Page tells ABC. He declined to say whether he had met with investigators again in the months after the FBI questioning. (The Russian ambassador often mentioned in connection with the investigation is going back to Moscow.)
