President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will participate in a roundtable discussion about women in the workforce Monday, an early sign of cooperation as Trudeau seeks to have good relations so Canada is not targeted in trade talks. In his first face-to-face meeting with the new president, Trudeau will also meet with Trump to talk about trade and participate in a working lunch, the AP reports. A White House official and a senior Canadian government official say the two countries plan to launch a new task force called the United States Canada Council for the Advancement of Women Business Leaders-Female Entrepreneurs. Ivanka Trump was involved in setting the agenda for the roundtable and recruiting participants.
Relations with the US are crucial as more than 75% of Canada's exports go to the US, meaning that despite the fact that the Liberal prime minister has many ideological differences with the Republican president, he is expected to focus on common economic interests instead of issues like Trump's travel ban. The visit may look very different from last year's love-in with the Obamas, but "that’s another world," former Canadian diplomat Paul Frazer tells the Toronto Star. "That world is not here right now so you have to deal with a different world." Frazer adds that since DC is a "bloody chaotic town" right now, Trump will probably be "open to a little calm."
